Will Radecki - Team Member
When Will Radecki introduced himself at the new student
orientation at MIIS in January, 1997, he said he had been
working in Botswana and Estonia, which made him a
specialist in developing nations with populations under 3
million, 30 years of independence, and blue, black and
white flags." I liked his quirky sense of humor and we
began working together that week! Will was my graduate
assistant through the challenging time when I was
president-elect and president of the international TESOL
association. I survived that job in part because of his
insight and level-headedness.
Bio
Will Radecki received his M.A. in TESOL (1998) from the Monterey Institute of
International Studies in Monterey, California. He has taught English to
speakers of other languages in Botswana, Estonia, Dubai (UAE), Madagascar
and the United States.
In Dubai, Mr. Radecki taught English for academic purposes at Zayed
University, a high tech women’s university with a four-skills, outcomes-based
curriculum. His strong interest in the role of technology in teaching and learning
led him to develop numerous computer-based teaching materials and tests,
as well as course websites and an online archive for departmental teaching
materials. Mr. Radecki also coordinated the two-campus “Basic IT Skills”
program, and designed the University’s first distance education course, the
Distance Web Project (http://www.geocities.com/crosscampushome/). He
frequently delivered teacher training workshops, and organized the Laptop
Sharing Forum – a popular inter-disciplinary conference for teachers to share
ideas on how to use laptops in the classroom.
In Botswana, Estonia and Madagascar, Mr. Radecki taught a variety of subjects
in primary, secondary, tertiary and adult schools. Nearly all of these institutions
were new or in transition, requiring creative and resourceful solutions to
materials, curricula and assessment challenges. Mr. Radecki’s specialty as a
course designer includes the integration of extracurricular projects in course
outcomes. Most recently, Mr. Radecki taught a graduate seminar on “Teaching
Writing Online” at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He is the
author of several articles, including Blended Learning for Emirati Women
(2005; http://www.zu.ac.ae/lthe/vol02/lthe02_04.html), and Laptops as
Language Learning Tools (2002).
