Kevin Jepson - Team Member
Kevin Jepson joined the MA program at the Monterey
Institute in January, 2001.  I was fortunate to be one of his
portfolio reviewers, and since his graduation we have
worked on some big projects together. The most recent of
these were writing reading passages and test items for the
adaptive GlobalEnglish Placement Exam, and writing the
computer-delivered Review Unit Tests for the second
edition of David Nunan’s Listen In EFL series. Kevin gives
excellent feedback and writes beautifully.
Bio

Kevin Jepson specializes in ESL curriculum development, assessment, and
technology-enhanced, situated learning. He is an ESL editor at CTB McGraw-
Hill and has worked for the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS),
Heinle, and GlobalEnglish and with Drs. David Nunan and Kathleen Bailey.
Kevin graduated with distinction from MIIS with a Master of Arts in TESOL and a
Computer-Assisted Language Learning Certificate in 2002.

ESL curriculum and test development are Kevin’s specialty. He has created
products for a range of ages, proficiency levels, and organizations, including
CTB’s K-12 LAS Links System and the CELDT and adult TABE TELS System; a
content-based ESL support curriculum for a vocational program at a Salinas,
Calif.-based community college; a Persian language curriculum for MIIS and
Monterey’s Defense Language Institute; and his own classrooms.

Using his extensive background in technology, Kevin also focuses on how the
Internet and computers can enhance language learning. Language Learning
and Technology published his online chat-based research this fall. In addition,
he has taught classes on corpus linguistics and relies on electronic
concordance research to support curriculum and test development.

Kevin’s teaching and research interests include technological and academic
literacies; how language use changes according to situation; learner
strategies; authentic tasks and materials; valid assessment; corpus
linguistics; collocation; and community- and project-based learning.

Kevin has taught ESL and EFL and trained EFL teachers in the U.S., Korea,
Hungary, Thailand, and Mexico and has lived abroad nearly half of his life.

In his work beyond ESL, Kevin is also the Technology Correspondent for a
national newsweekly, The Credit Union Journal.  Kevin researches and writes
about how credit unions use technology to meet their business needs. Kevin
attended the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, where he
earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Journalism.

In his life beyond work, Kevin feels most at home in his garden.
