Portfolio Seminar (Education 650)
Professor Kathleen M. Bailey, PhD
Monterey Institute of International Studies

ED 650 follows a seminar format to provide Portfolio writers with a forum for
guidance and feedback as they prepare to meet the Program’s exit
requirements. As such, the primary goal of the Portfolio Seminar is not
information delivery.  Rather, its goals include:

1. Establishing clear and unambiguous guidelines for developing, revising, and
polishing components of the Program Portfolio;
2. Equipping candidates with the critical and creative tools necessary for
developing an academically and professionally satisfactory set of materials for
presentation in the Program Portfolio;
3. Assisting Portfolio writers with sharpening their decision-making, idea-
generating, drafting, peer feedback, and revising skills;
4.  Providing candidates with meaningful faculty and peer feedback.

There are no required textbooks or reading requirements
per se for this
seminar.  Instead, each student is expected to have access to the following
valuable resources:

1.  A copy of the latest version of the Portfolio document, "Program-level
Assessment in the MATESOL/MATFL Curriculum: The Portfolio";
2.  Personal copies of sample Portfolio components (e.g., Position Papers,
Revised Projects, Professional Products, CVs, etc.), available at the reserve
desk of the Library;
3.  A personal copy of Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association.
4.  A recent, reliable, and user-friendly writers’ manual that provides guidelines of
modern usage and style.
5.  Personal copies of source materials on Portfolio assessment, also available
at the Reserve Desk of the Library.

A list of selected references on teachers’ portfolios will be provided in case
students wish to do additional background reading (see last page of this
document).

Initially, we will dedicate time in our sessions to discussing and clarifying
requirements and expectations as they pertain to particular disciplinary domains
and specific components of the Portfolio.  A majority of meetings will also involve
workshop activities related to the review of your developing Portfolio products.  As
we move closer to the Portfolio submission date, seminar sessions will be
dedicated principally, if not exclusively, to peer and instructor feedback.
