Applied Linguistics Research (Linguistics 640)

Applied Linguistics Research is a seminar predicated on three assumptions
shared by the TESOL/TFL faculty at MIIS.  First, MA holders in our field must be
able to conduct original research (as well as be critical consumers of others’
research).  Second, effective language teachers are researchers, at least in their
own classrooms and communities.  Third, naturalistic inquiry and action
research are important empirical traditions in applied linguistics, and well-
educated people in our field know how and when to use them.

This seminar includes work with the traditions of action research and naturalistic
inquiry, as well as the experimental paradigm.  In addition to introducing
students to these approaches to research, there are seven key goals in this
seminar:

1 - to develop students’ skills in planning and implementing original research,
including the development of data collection instruments and procedures;
2 - to provide guided experience in data collection and data analysis using a
variety of research procedures;
3 - to fine-tune students’ research reporting skills, both oral and written;
4 - to help students develop a core bibliography on research methodology, as
well as on the topic of their choice;
5 - to help students develop their abilities to review research proposals and
reports in a positive and professional manner;
6 - to provide students with practice in making professional oral presentations;
7 - to develop students’ confidence in their own ability to write professional
proposals and publishable research reports; and
8 - to help students develop their time management skills as language teaching
professionals.

In the Applied Linguistics Research seminar, students will first produce a
research proposal. Then they will plan and execute an original empirical
research project and report on the outcomes in a professional forum.  

There are two required textbooks:  Nunan’s (1992) book,
Research Methods in
Language Learning
(Cambridge University Press), and Bailey and Nunan, Eds.,
(1996)
Voices from the Language Classroom (Cambridge University Press).  
You will also be required to use the APA Style Manual.  In addition, several
selected articles will be assigned and placed on reserve in the MIIS Library, and
several items will be placed on the class conference.
