Professor, Monterey Institute of International Studies
My main work is teaching in the masters degree programs in TESOL and
Teaching Foreign Languages at the Monterey Institute (MIIS). I have been on the
faculty there since 1981. In addition to teaching graduate courses, I am the
advisor for the Peace Corps Masters International students, and those students
enrolled in the MIIS Certificate in Language Program Administration. Click the

Visiting Professor, Macquarie University
I am also a visiting professor in the Doctor of Applied Linguistics degree
program offered by Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. In the summer of
2005 I had the opportunity to work with fourteen brilliant PhD students in Puebla,

My newest teacher education venture is teaching online with Anaheim University.
My colleagues in that context are David Nunan, Rod Ellis, and Ruth Wajnryb.
I am teaching three courses in this Master of Science in TESOL Program, which
is open to qualified students from around the world.

Past President, International TESOL organization
Beyond my teaching I am an active member of the international TESOL
association -- Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. I served
as TESOL's president from 1998 to 1999, and I strongly encourage any English
teaching professional to become a member of this important organization.

Finally, I am a member of the Board of Trustees of TIRF -- The International
Research Foundation for English Language Education. TIRF's three main goals
are (1) to implement a research and development program that will generate
new knowledge and inform and improve the quality of English language teaching
and learning; (2) to promote the application of research to practical language
problems; and (3) to collect, organize, and disseminate information and
