Case-based Approach to Teacher Development (2006)
Thai TESOL Conference, Thailand
I gave the opening plenary at this conference, the theme
of which was "Three Pillars of TESOL – Teaching,
Learning, Research." In talking about case-based
approaches to teacher development, I tried to
incorporate this theme to show how writing, reading and
discussing cases based on teaching and learning can
promote teacher development. If you view the slides,
you will see some photographs of beautiful orchids. At
these points during the presentation, I was reading
aloud a case about a perplexing Thai learner of EFL.
Reflective Teaching (2006)
FPIPLV World Congress, Goteborg, Sweden
This plenary presentation defines Reflective Teaching
and summarizes the results of the reflective teaching
practices of over 1,000 language teachers throughout
the world via an online survey which Sarah Springer and
I developed.
Washback (2006)
Second Language Testing and Evaluation Forum,
Athens, Greece
In June, 2006 I took my first trip to Greece. I was asked
to speak about washback – the effect of tests on
teaching and learning. I tried to tailor the PowerPoint
presentation to fit the local culture and educational goals.
Communication Strategies (2007)
Regional Teachers' Conference, Quetzaltenango,
Guatemala
For my second trip to Guatemala I went to the highlands
and attended a very interesting conference for English
language teachers. This is the plenary presentation that
I gave there. Starting from the conference theme, I
worked hard to come up with a presentation that would
be meaningful for that group of teachers.

Neil Anderson - Heinle Award (2005)
TESOL conference, San Antonio, Texas
I really enjoy "roasting" people. So far I have had the
pleasure of managing roasts of Lyle Bachman, David
Nunan, Neil Anderson, and Donald Freeman (with
Diane Larsen-Freeman). Here's the PowerPoint of the
roast of Neil Anderson. The song at the end is sung to
the tune of "Deep in the Heart of Texas" since the TESOL
Convention was held in San Antonio in 2005.
