Books by Kathleen M. Bailey

Below is a listing of my most recently published books.  Where available, we
have included a link to each publisher's web site.
Language Teacher Supervision:  A Case-based Approach
(2006)  publisher's site
At the Monterey Institute of International Studies I offer a seminar
on language teacher supervision. For several years I used books
and photocopied articles from business, general education, and
psychology. Finally I decided it was time to pull together all the
disparate knowledge of the field and produce a coherent book on
the topic.

Speaking
(2005)  publisher's site
David Nunan edited a volume for McGraw Hill called Practical
English Language Teaching, in which I wrote the chapter about
teaching speaking.  From that original volume, some chapters led
to stand-alone books. I enjoyed writing the book on speaking
because it allowed me to combine theory and research findings
with some of my favorite activities for teaching speaking.

Pursing Professional Development - Self as Source
(2001)  publisher's site
In 1996, Andy Curtis, David Nunan and I wrote an article about
professional development for TESOL Quarterly. We discovered in
the process that we had enough material for a book, and working
together was so much fun that we decided to collaborate on this
volume – the last in the TeacherSource series (Donald Freeman,
Series Editor).

Learning About Language Assessment
Learning About Language Assessment - Dilemmas, Decisions,
Directions
(1998)  publisher's site
Donald Freeman invited me to write the assessment book for the
TeacherSource Series (Heinle & Heinle) – a series that
incorporates teachers’ knowledge along with research and theory.
I have tried to write about assessment from an experiential point
of view, putting into this book approximately the first half of the
language assessment seminar that I teach at the Monterey
Institute. All of the stories in the Teachers’ Voices sections are
true.

Voices from the Language Classroom
(1996)  publisher's site
At the Monterey Institute I teach a course entitled Applied
Linguistics Research, in which the graduate students design and
conduct an original study.  I was looking for a good collection of
qualitative research in our field, and found there was nothing
current. So I asked David Nunan if he would edit this book with
me.

book: New Ways in Teaching Speaking
New Ways in Teaching Speaking
(1994)  publisher's site
With my colleague, Lance Savage, I edited this volume for
TESOL. It contains numerous ideas about teaching speaking –
all written by teachers, for teachers.  Even though the book is over
ten years old now, it still offers many creative ideas for teaching
speaking and pronunciation.

Dick Allwright was my teacher at UCLA in 1975-76, and we have
been friends ever since. This is the first book I ever wrote and I
am honored that Dick asked me to write it with him.  I use it when
I teach seminars on language classroom research and for our
introductory course on classroom observation.

book: International Teaching Assistants
Foreign Teaching Assistants in U.S. Universities
(1984)
NAFSA (National Association of Foreign Student Affairs) asked
me to co-edit this volume about international teaching assistants
in US universities since my doctoral dissertation had been on that
topic. The issue continues to be important and highly politicized
on many US college campuses.  In fact, the international TESOL
association has an interest section of people who work
specifically in this area.
